NHS Highland’s oncology service is facing pressure because of a shortage of specialist consultants, with some cancer patients potentially facing delays to treatment.

The health board says it is working with other NHS boards to secure support for patients affected and ensure they can be treated as soon as possible.

A spokesperson said: “The great majority of pathways continue as normal, with local treatment continuing.”

Cancer teams are contacting patients where their care is affected to explain what the staffing pressures mean for their individual treatment plans. NHS Highland says “safe clinical oversight is being maintained throughout”.

The shortage of specialist oncologists reflects a wider national issue.

The spokesperson added: “We recognise that for the patients who are affected this will be worrying.”

NHS Highland has not said how many patients are affected or how long the current staffing pressures are expected to continue.
