Police appeal for information after crash at Cluanie
Police are appealing for information after a serious crash on the A87.
The incident happened at 2.50pm on Monday 15 June.
Two motorbikes were involved. A black Royal Enfield Himalayan and a grey Yamaha MT-09 Tracer.
There were two people on the Royal Enfield. A 42-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman. Both were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and are in a serious but not life threatening condition.
The Yamaha rider was a 39-year-old man. He was taken to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and is in a stable condition.
The road was closed in both directions until 10.10pm on Monday night.
Sergeant Chris Donaldson said:
“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.
“If you were driving in the area around the time of the crash please check any dash-cam footage you have and call us if you have captured anything.”
Police in the Highlands and Islands are warning dog owners to be vigilant as incidents of livestock worrying continue to rise.
The problem occurs when dogs chase, attack, or scare farm animals. It poses an added risk to animal welfare during the lambing and calving season.
PC Anna Jones of Kyle Police Station told Radio Skye:
“It can have serious consequences. Even well trained dogs can cause harm if they’re off the lead or not under control near livestock.
“These incidents can lead to injury, distress, miscarriage and even death for some of those animals.
“The impact on farmers can be significant so it’s something to bear in mind coming into the season.
“The increase in tourism in this part of the country will lead to a lot of people coming here who aren’t fully aware of the consequences of having dogs off the lead.
“More awareness is needed.”
Anyone found guilty of livestock worrying could face:
- A fine of up to £40,000
- Up to 12 months in prison
- In some cases, landowners may legally shoot a dog to stop an ongoing attack

Healthcare meeting in Portree
A meeting between NHS Highland, local council and Government officials, and the SOS NHS Save Portree Hospital group will be held in Portree hospital this afternoon.
Representatives from the Scottish Ambulance Service will also be present. Sir Lewis Ritchie has agreed to join the meeting via video call.
One of the items on the agenda will be to share feedback regarding the local provision of health and care services.
It follows reports received last week regarding the amount of public money being spent on agency staff across Broadford and Portree hospitals, and Home Farm nursing home.

Short-terms lets regulations could “decimate” Highland sector
A Highland MSP has warned that the Scottish Government’s new short-term lets legislation could decimate the sector across the region.
MSP Jamie Halcro Johnstone, who took part in a protest at Holyrood on Tuesday against the regulations, said that the legislation would just inconvenience operators but fundamentally threaten their businesses and household incomes.
The Scottish Goverment has said the licensing has been introduced to ensure short-term lets in Scotland are safe and meet consistent quality standards, including having gas certificates and suitable electrical equipment.
However, the Conservative members went on to argue many owners who are running their businesses to make a little extra money or to supplement their salaries or pension were being asked to jump through multiple hoops – with potentially thousands of pounds of additional costs.
On Tuesday Skye and Raasay Councillor Ruraidh Stewart that around just said 3,500 of an estimated 10,000 short-term lets providers in the Highlands had so far applied for the scheme, which closes on 1st October.
Staffin police patrols carried out following excessive speed concerns
Police officers have carried out patrols in Staffin following concerns raised through the local community council regarding motorists driving at excessive speeds in the area.
The police stated that have warned several drivers about appropriate speed and considerate driving in rural communities.

Lochalsh winter maintenance plans agreed at council area meeting
The Winter Maintenance Plan for Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh for this coming winter has been approved by members of the area committee, following a meeting on Monday.
Committee Chair, Councillor Liz Kraft, said it was it was important plans were put in place early to ensure the gritting policy, winter maintenance team and the equipment and supplies required are in place and ready to be implemented when the winter weather arrives.
Councillor Kraft is also encouraging the public to familiarise themselves with the gritting maps for the area specific to them which has been approved by the council.
She said that while it wasn’t possible for the council’s team to treat every road and path, the dedicated team “work tirelessly to best meet the needs of the area.”
Councillor Kraft said that the council are continuing to encourage Community self-help, under the council’s Winter Resilience Scheme, where communities can submit applications via their community council to carry out footway gritting operations.”
Skye under-17s captain “gutted” at narrow semi-final loss
Gutted, that’s how Skye Camanachd’s under-17s captain summed up his feelings following the team aggregate defeat to Fort William in the semi-final of the London Shield last night.
Captain Archie Miller struck twice for Skye in a 2-2 draw in Portree, but it was Fort William who progressed to the final 4-3 on aggregate on the back of their 2-1 win in the first leg.
Speaking to Radio Skye, Archie said: “I thought we were very unlucky, as we had plenty of chances to win it, but it never came off for us, it wasn’t our day.
“Fort William are very good on the break, and they took their chances well, better than we did and that’s what it came down to.
Looking ahead to what he believes will be a bright future for the team, he added: “I’m obviously gutted to have come out on the wrong side of the result tonight but there are plenty of positives to take as out of the 15 players tonight I am the only one the team will be losing next season.
“They are in a really good place for next season to build out what we have done this year – getting to the MacTavish Cup Final and London Shield semi-final.”

Concerns raised as essential signage blocked from view
Concerns have been raised in Sleat over the obstruction of essential signage due to overgrown vegetation.
The Sleat Community Council have reported the issue to the Highland Council three times. It affects the 20 mph flashing warning signs that slow traffic during school opening hours at Bun Sgoil Shlèite.
In a post on social media, the Sleat Community Council said:
“Despite three separate online reports to the The Highland Council since before the end of the summer term the Bun-sgoil Shlèite southbound 20mph warning sign is still partly obscured by overgrown trees.
“With the summer holidays continuing for many and our roads remaining busy, it is disappointing that the council reporting system has failed the community.”
The community council are asking drivers to use extreme caution when approaching the school.
Car versus motorbike in road traffic accident on A855
There was severe disruption on the road near the Achachork junction today after a road traffic accident.
Long queues formed on either side of the accident, with motorists being advised to avoid the area and use the diversion routes.
A police spokesperson told Radio Skye:
“Around 11.25am on Wednesday, 16 August 2023, we were called to a report of crash involving a car and a motorcycle on the A855 near Portree. Emergency services are in attendance.”
Man jailed after HGV hits Inverness pedestrian
A 33 year old man from Harris has been jailed for three years after the lorry he was driving struck a woman in Inverness in March 2021.
The woman required emergency surgery to amputate her leg after being crushed by the wheels of the HGV.
The driver, John Campbell, was over the legal alcohol driving limit and has also been banned from driving for seven and a half years.
Corran ferry service off… again
The Corran ferry service has ben cancelled for vehicles just over 24 hours after it started sailing again.
An ongoing issue with the steering system onboard relief vessel MV Maid of Glencoul means that vehicles are unable to be carried across the Corran Narrows.
The operators of the service, The Highland Council, has advised local communities that the 48 year old ferry requires new parts which could take several weeks to source.

Warning of disruption to Skye Calmac ferry route
National ferry operators Calmac Ferries has confirmed that the final week of the summer timetable will be released in two phases.
Contingency measures are also being put in place due to the ongoing absence of major vessel MV Hebridean Isles from active service.
On the local Skye routes, there will be some disruption as the fleet transitions from the summer to winter timetables.
A single vessel service will operate between Mallaig and Armadale on the 20th, 21st and 22nd October with MV Loch Fyne as MV Coruisk will be redeployed to the Clyde.
Phase one of the remaining summer timetable is available to book from today, 16th August, with phase two following on the 23rd August.

Fifty-year-old woman in serious condition after Elgol fall
A 50-year-old woman is in a serious condition after falling from a cliff in the Elgol area.
Police Scotland told Radio Skye that it received a report around 3.35pm on Thursday afternoon that a woman had fallen from a cliff in the Elgol area.
The Skye Mountain Rescue Team and coastguard rescue teams from Portree and Dunvegan, the Scottish Ambulance Service, Helimed were also involved in the multi-agency agency operation.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said that the 50-year-old was taken by air ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where she remains in a serious condition.
Coca Cola tops brand products pollution across Scotland
Environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage has published a new report highlighting the top 12 companies whose product comprise 70 per cent of plastic pollution in Scotland.
Collected by citizen scientists, the brand audit report found that Coca Cola’s plastic products topped the pollution list, with McDonald’s and Nestle taking second and third place.
The report which based on 39 audits conducted in Scotland, with 3,457 polluting items found.
Emily Johns, (pictured below) lives in south Skye and is part of the Skye Beach Cleans group.
Speaking to Radio Skye today about the survey, she said that Coca Cola has taken steps to tackle pollution by changing its bottles so the caps are attached to the bottles.
Surfers Against Sewage is urging the government to introduce an ‘all-in’ deposit return scheme (DRS) for drinks containers of all sizes and materials, including glass as soon as possible.
The government has delayed plans for a Deposit Return Scheme until 2025.
The survey comes ahead of a joint project between Skye Beach Cleans and Loughborough University comparing present-day litter across the island’s beach with a pioneering study carried in 1972.
The project begins on Elgol beach this Sunday (23rd July).
Former Rangers defender to star in Skye charity football match
Former Ranger star Marvin Andrews is set to return to Skye next weekend to feature in a special charity match in aid of Maggies.
Marvin Andrews made 53 appearances for Rangers helping them to win the Scottish Premier League title and the Scottish League Cup, he also represent Trinidad and Tobago in their debut World Cup Finals in 2006.
The defender will play in a the June McCaherty Memorial Shield.
The match will be contested between Portree Juniors and a Juniors Legends side at Portree High School Astro Turf at 2pm on Saturday 29th July.
The match is in memory of the June McCaherty, the late wife of the former Portree Juniors manager Phil McCaherty.

Lucky2BHere founder Ross Cowie said he was delighted to receive a cheque of £2,000, which will support the charity’s work in saving lives, improving lives, and in education.

Shiel to take on Kingussie amid Skye call-off drama
Kinlochshiel are set to face Kingussie on Saturday in the Mowi Premiership this weekend in what will be the reigning champions first match since they were penalised for a call-off against Skye.
On Wednesday evening, the Camanachd Association informed the reigning Kingussie that they would be deducted two points for the call-off.
The grand slam winners are contesting the decision by appeal.
Kinlochshiel finished as runners-up to Kingussie in the Premiership last season.

Skye Bridge to close for four nights as part of planned works
Bear Scotland are planning to close the Skye Bridge for four nights later this year to allow resurfacing works to be carried out.
The planned works will take place on the A87 at Kyleakin roundabout from Monday 23rd October to Friday 27th October between 7pm and 6am and will include the closure of the Skye Bridge.
The road maintenance firm will allow residents to exit Kyleakin and Old Kyle Farm Road at any time via an escort, however, residents seeking to enter those area will have to wait on the hourly amnesty.
Bear Scotland has sent out letters to local residents and stakeholders as part of its initial consultation on the work to best plan the closure and provide ample notice.

Council seeks owner of abandoned buses on Staffin beach route
The Highland Council is looking to reach the owner of two abandoned buses which are currently occupying a layby at the road to Staffin beach.
The vehicles which are two disused single decker Stagecoach buses are currently parked in the safe stopping area on the busy route which is used by locals and visitors.
On Tuesday evening an officer form the council’s environmental health team attended the site and placed stickers on each of the vehicles.
Enquires are ongoing to identify the ownership of the vehicles.
If no owner, is found for the buses, the council will have them removed from the site and disposed of.
Information sought on wilful fire-raising in Broadford
Police are appealing for information in relation to wilful fire-raising in Broadford which occurred on Monday night.
Two fires were reported around 10.45pm on Monday in Blackpark at Broadford.
Enquiries are underway into the incident and the police has stated there has been information to suggest there may have been a vehicle in the vicinity a short time prior to the fires being discovered.

Raasay leading the way in Scotland’s net zero quest
One of the team leading Raasay’s journey to become carbon neutral has said the island can act as an beacon in the Scottish Government’s target to reach net zero by 2045.
Raasay is one of six places across Scotland leading the way as part of the government’s carbon neutral islands project.
Tom Lusink, pictured alongside fellow project officer Rosie MacInnes, told Radio Skye: “All being well, we will be lighthouse communities, which will help show the way for not just island communities, but all communities looking to de-carbonise going forward to the 2045 goal.”
He added: “The overarching theme of the project is climate resilience; how can we mitigate our climate impact, how can we get to net zero.
“While doing this a really big part of it is how we can improve the quality of life in general on these islands.”
Under-fire minister “shambolic” says Highland MSP
Highland MSP Jamie Halcro Johnstone has accused under-fire Green MSP Lorna Slater (pictured) of leading a shambolic rollout of the deposit return scheme.
Mr Halcro Johnstone comments came after Ms Slater survived a vote of no confidence in her position as circular economy minister earlier this week.
On Tuesday evening, MSPs voted down the motion by 68 votes to 55.
Jamie Halcro Johnston, who is the Conservative Shadow Minister for Business, Trade, Tourism and Enterprise, accused Ms Slater of presiding over a shambolic and, ultimately, failed roll out of the Scottish Deposit Return Scheme.
He argued the scheme has caused real uncertainty and unnecessary costs for businesses right across the Highlands and Islands.
However, Green MSP Mark Ruskell, contended that the motion was not just an attack on Lorna Slater, but on everyone who believes in devolution.

Skye school takes on 500-mile defib challenge
Pupils from Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh and Sgoil Araich have today taken part in a 500-mile walking challenge to raise money for a community defibrillator.
The school pupils were joined by parents and staff as they undertook the challenge from the Skye Camanachd club house in Portree.
Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh aim is to raise £2,000 for a defibrillator through the Skye-based charity Lucky2Bhere, which has place more than 700 life-saving devices across Scotland.
Radio Skye went along to the Skye Camanachd clubhouse this morning for the start of the challenge.

NHS Highland “sorry” over departure of key Skye health care worker
NHS Highland has today praised the work of a long-serving occupational therapist on Skye who left her job after she claims she was denied full-time hours.
Anne Marie Ferguson worked as an occupational therapist on Skye for a decade helping patients discharged from both Broadford and Portree Hospital.
On Tuesday she told Radio Skye that she left her job after her her request to increase hours from 25 to 37 a week to meet the demands of her job and managed increased cost of living were rejected.
The former healthcare worker said that while she had no choice but to leave the NHS, she feels she has let her former colleagues down.
A statement sent to Radio Skye today, a spokesperson for NHS said: “We are sorry that Anne Marie has moved from her post as occupational therapist as she was a valued member of the team locally.
“Over the past few years, we have increased the local team’s capacity by 25 per cent to meet clinical need.
“Although we currently do not have vacancies in the occupational therapy team on Skye we are working with local teams to consider where we can use peoples’ skills and expertise in wider roles across clinical areas.
“I am sorry that this was not yet an option for Anne Marie at the time she left the Board.”
Police appeal for information on fatal Strathcarron crash
Police are appealing for information following a fatal road crash in Strathcarron on Tuesday night.
Police received a report of a Volkswagen Polo colliding with a bridge on the A890 at Strathcarron at 9.05 on Tuesday night
Emergency services attended and the 79-year-old male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed for several hours as crash scene investigators conducted enquiries at the scene.
Sergeant Alasdair MacKay said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash and I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident to contact us.”
Sergeant McKay asked for those with dash cam equipment to check their footage as it could hold images which would assist with the police’s enquiries.
Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 3769 of 23 May 2023.
Highland public toilet map shows lack of baby changing and disabled provisions
The Highland Council has today published a map detailing public conveniences across the local authority region.
The number of Comfort Scheme providers -providing public convenience facilities is set to increase by more than 30 per cent from 42 to 55 with new 3-year agreements in place.
However, of the 12 public toilets located across Skye, only two, in Glendale and at the Old Man of Storr, provide both baby changing and disabled facilities, while in Lochalsh, Glenelg is the only convenience stop to offer both provisions.
The results of a survey conducted by the Highland Council found that 14 per cent of the current comfort schemes are located in Skye and Lochalsh, while 27 per cent of all the comfort scheme operators were on the NC500.

Body found in search for man missing at Fairy Pools
The body of a 25-year-old man who went missing on Thursday afternoon while at the Fairy Pools on Skye has been found today.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said the body of the man was found around 12.10pm this afternoon in the Fairy Pools, near Carbost.
A multi-agency search began at 3pm on Thursday for the missing man who was reported to have fallen into river rapids near the Fairy Pools.
The operation led by Police Scotland involved coastguard teams from Stornoway, Skye, Kyle the Scottish Ambulance Service’s air ambulance and the Skye Mountain Rescue Team.
Fourteen members of the Skye Mountain Rescue Team were involved for six hours on Thursday during the search.
The police spokesperson said that the family of the 25-year-old man who fell in the water on Thursday has been informed. And a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Earlier today traffic management were positioned at the Glenbrittle road junction at Carbost to divert a huge volume of visitors away from the Fairy Pools.
The road reopened around 2pm on Friday afternoon.
Mental Health Awareness Week focus: “A privilege to help others”
A member of the Skye and Lochalsh Mental Health association has spoken about the crucial role the local charity plays in her life.
Chatting to Radio Skye during Mental Health Health Awareness Week, Muriel Watson talk about the friendships she has made and the key support she has received from the long-standing service
She said: “Sandra is excellent, when we are having an off day, she encourages us to come up. You might not feel like getting out of bed sometimes, but she encourages you as all the staff do.
“I am on my own, I don’t have a partner. It is good that Sandra is here, as you can make friends and its good company. You can play a game of scrabble to pass the time and get advice as well.
Sandra MacKenzie, who works as the manager at Am Fasgadh, told Radio Skye that funding remains a constant challenge for the organisation which marks its 30th anniversary this year.
“The biggest stress for me is always funding.
“We are always short of money and not knowing year from year where we are.
“But it is an amazing thing to spend your life helping other people.
“That helps our mental health – the fact that we are able to do that. It is a privilege to help other people and to try to make their lives a little bit better.”
Shiel star praises role of brother in upturn of club’s form
Skye and Kinlochshiel are both in Mowi Premiership action this weekend with the islanders taking on Lovat at Pairc Nan Laoch live on Radio Skye.
Skye come into the match on a high having sealed their place in the MacTavish Cup final with a 3-1 win over Glenurquhart last Saturday and will be keen to take that form into this weekend clash.
Lovat are currently seventh and two points ahead of Skye.
As well as Premiership points up for grabs, the teams will also be contested the Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup
The game is a 3pm throw up and live on Radio Skye.
Shiel meanwhile, are looking to continue their impressive run of three wins on the spin as they travel to Mossfield Park to face Oban Camanachd.
Shiel can leapfrog their opponents with a win and move into 5th place.
Speaking to Radio Skye, Kinlochshiel forward Keith MacRae praised the impact of his brother Finlay in helping the side get out of their early season rut.
He said: “We had a pretty bad start at the beginning of the season with the results.
We have had my brother Finlay upfront, he has done a power of work, gotten a few goals and helped linked up the forward line.
“I would say at the start of the year we weren’t playing particularly bad we just didn’t take our chances.
“In some games we had a lot of pressure, but the goals weren’t coming. We are happy that we are winning games now and settling down. ”
Local derby in Strathdearn Cup
Lochcarron and Skye will lock horns on Saturday as the sides met in a local derby in the Strathdearn Cup quarter final.
Skye defeated Beauly 3-2 last month to claim their place in the last eight, while Lochcarron progress on account of walkover against Strathspey.
That match is 2.30 throw up at Battery Park.
Kinlochshiel face Aberdeen University at Reraig at 2.30 for their place in the semi-finals.
Like Lochcarron, Shiel earned their place after a walkover against Lochaber, while Aberdeen Uni saw off Kilmallie 2-0 to set up the tie.
Skye Ladies seek to close gap at the top
Skye Ladies have the chance to move within a points of leaders Badenoch when the host Inverness in Portree on Saturday.
The islanders were in superb form last weekend as they hit five away to Lochaber and could put pressure on the reigning league champions with victory over the side from the Highland capital.
The match is 12pm throw up at Pairc Nan Laoch in Portree on Saturday.
Badenoch meanwhile will take on Glasgow Mid Argyll at the Dell on Sunday.

MSP Grant to quiz First Minister on unprecedented ferry disruption
Highlands and Islands MSP Rhoda Grant is set to quiz First Minister Humza Yousaf today over disruption to the ferry network across the two regions.
Ms Grant has lodged a question for Mr Yousaf at this afternoon session of First Minister’s Questions – asking what immediate action the Scottish Goverment will take to improve ferry services across the Highlands and Islands amid recent unprecedented disruption.
On Monday, Robbie Drummond, chief executive of CalMac announced that the ferry operator had decided to defer the launch of its new booking and ticketing platform – from 25th April to 16th May – to focus on handling urgent issues relating to the disruption and delays to many of its services.
In January, the CalMac CEO revealed that nearly two fifths of its fleet were more than 30 years old, with the general life expectancy of vessels 25-30 years.
In March, the MV Hebrides vessel serving Uig, Lochmaddy and Tarbert was forced to return to Uig after a fire broke out in the engine room of the vessel.
Audit Scotland’s most recent report states that the two new vessels under construction, which will join CalMac’s fleet, are currently estimated to cost £293 million, with delivery already five years late – despite additional Scottish Government funding in 2022/23 and 2023/24.
Skye school bus goes off road on A87
A school bus carrying school pupils from Portree to Kyle went off road after being involved in a road traffic incident.
No one was injured in the incident in which resulted in the vehicle going off the road on A87 south of Sconser around Drum nan Cleoc.
A Police Scotland spokesperson told Radio Skye: “Around 4.30pm on Wednesday, 19 April, 2023, police received a report of a bus coming off the road on the A87 on the Isle of Skye. Recovery was arranged.”
No injuries were reported.
Portree High School later confirmed that all the pupils were safe following the incident and were transferred onto alternative buses to continue their journey.
Scottish Goverment must improve to deliver climate goals
The Scottish Goverment needs to improve to deliver the country’s climate change goals.
That’s according to a new report published today by Audit Scotland.
The report states that although the government’s climate governance has improved since the former First Minister declared a climate emergency in 2019 its adaption to the impact of climate change has received less focus than reducing emissions and hitting net zero targets.
It goes on to add that there are gaps in reporting, making it difficult to assess progress against climate policy. And there has been no workforce plan for climate change since the Net Zero department was established in late 2021.
However, one is expected in spring 2023.
Stephen Boyle, Auditor General for Scotland, said: “The Scottish Government’s set up for responding to the climate crisis has constantly evolved since 2019. But the different parts of government could be better co-ordinated.
“The government’s risk management arrangements also need to improve, particularly the work needed to ensure Scotland adapts to the impact of climate change.”
He added: “Work is ongoing across the Scottish Government to tackle these organisational weaknesses, and it’s vital that happens quickly given the urgency of the climate situation.”
