Portree market to raise funds for young carers

A new market is to be held in Portree next month in aid of Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers.

The event is on Saturday 20 June at the Portree Community Centre and is being organised by Jack Kalaher.

There will be stalls featuring fresh local produce, arts and crafts, and coffee and cake.

Jack said he was inspired to put the event on to showcase the variety of small businesses across the island.

Speaking to Radio Skye, he said:

“The concept is to have a market where I can bring in folk from all over the island that maybe don’t have a building. It’s a big community market.”

Jack said a range of businesses will be represented.

“There is going to be a big mix. I’ve got Donald Mackenzie who does beef and other meats, a bunch of people who do local baking and honesty boxes, and a couple of local artists, jewellery makers, and more craft stuff.

“I’ve got the Coffee Box from Dunvegan who have just opened up there, so there will be refreshments too.”

“Garrow who does all the posters and does graphic design is going to have a stall. He has a gallery in Staffin.”

“There’s a big draw of people who are coming for it.”

The event is sponsored by Skye Mountaineering, Cuillin Cleans and Jean Dow Herbalist.
