Shiel and Skye back Camanachd Association’s respect plea

Kinlochshiel Shinty Club and Skye Camanachd have given their wholehearted support to a message from the Camanachd Association to respect match officials.

In an email sent out on Monday afternoon, the Camanachd Association said it was disappointing to have to remind all clubs to respect match officials.

The national shinty body said there had been several instances over the past weeks in which players, coach and supporters had challenged decisions made by referees and goal judges and made comments against the officials.

The association has urged clubs to accept the decisions made and said that while new officials had been recruited others had left because of the abuse they had been receiving.

Kinlochshiel said it was disappointing to read the message, while Skye Camanachd chairperson Thomas Wilson told Radio Skye the club also back the calls.

 

Countdown to Skye Live 2023 gathers pace

The countdown to this year Skye Live Festival is gathering pace with just over a week left until the 2023 musical bonanza.

Western Isles sensation Peat and Diesel will kick-off this year’s event on Thursday 11th May, while local acts such as Skye’s own Valtos will also be starring at the festival.

Speaking ahead of the three-day festival, Skye Live co-founder Niall Munro told Radio Skye that showcasing the best of young highlands and islands talent was one of the main drivers of the event.

As well as attracting musical talent from across the region, he said the festival is also providing to be a hit with music lovers from across the world.

Highland roads ranked 25th out of 32 in national survey

The Highland Council region has moved up one place in a national roads survey from 26th to 25th out of 32 local authorities in Scotland.

The annual results from the Scottish Road Maintenance Condition Survey for 2022/23 found that 36.5 per cent of the roads within the Highland region need treatment.

The findings are set to be discussed at this Thursday meeting of the council’s economy and infrastructure committee.

At the meeting, the committee is set to allocate £7.7 million of the council’s £20.5 million capital roads budget for carriageway structural maintenance.

Skye looks to receive a total of £1.8 million, covering more than 99,000 square miles.

The investment includes surfacing works on the B886 Fairy Bridge – Stein, and on the A851 at Kinloch, and inlay works on the A850 Snizort Bridge-Peiness Road.

Highland MSP to highlight social isolation in parliament

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick will today highlight the issues of social isolation and loneliness during a motion in the Scottish Parliament.

Ms Roddick is set to talk about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which she says has been disproportionately felt by disabled people, younger people and single-person households.

The SNP member said she believes that preventative action is vital to ensure that negative mental health consequences are addressed.

The Scottish Government is investing £3.8 million through its Social Isolation and Loneliness Fund to create opportunities for people to connect with one another in Scotland’s communities.
