Today we see an outpouring of sadness as the Highland’s mourns the death of the beloved Queen Elizabeth II
The Convener of The Highland Council, Councillor Bill Lobban expressed his deepest sympathies to The Royal Family, he said:
“On behalf of The Highland Council and communities of the Highlands, we join the nation in mourning for Her Majesty The Queen. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to all members of The Royal Family and Household and honour Her Majesty The Queen’s long service and duty to the country.”
At Highland Council locations where flags are flown – all flags have been lowered to half-mast and a period of silence will be observed, in accordance with national protocol.
Books of condolence and gardens of remembrance have been opened at locations across the Highlands – details of which can found at: www.highland.gov.uk/condolence
Also, as a mark of respect, and in line with national guidance, the Council will only be carrying out essential business meetings of The Highland Council during the period of mourning and details of these will be published on the Council’s website at www.highland.gov.uk
Commenting on the death of Her Majesty the Queen, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“The Queen served our country with unparalleled distinction over seventy years. Her loss will be felt by people around the world.
“Her Majesty witnessed huge changes during her long reign, yet remained a constant symbol of duty, even into her later years.
“The expression of affection shown to the Queen during her Diamond Jubilee year, not least here in the Highlands and Islands, has been a testament to the respect and esteem she has held.
“My thoughts and prayers are particularly with the Royal Family, as well as people across the region, the United Kingdom and the wider Commonwealth.
Following the sad news and passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll, Camanachd Association President Steven Mackenzie has issued the following statement:
“On behalf of the Camanachd Association, we extend our deepest condolences to the Royal Family following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
As a mark of respect the Camanachd Association will join the nation in a period of mourning this weekend and reflect on the sense of service and the spirit that characterised Her Majesty’s long reign.”
All organised shinty fixtures and events for the weekend of 10th September are to be postponed.
Kyle RNLI have cancelled this years Maritime Day.
Due to the death the queen who was the patron of the RNLI, all events are to be postponed or cancelled for the next 12 days during the period of national mourning.
On Sunday Radio Skye will be broadcasting the Portree and Bracadale Free Church Service on Sunday at 2pm. Please note their fundraising day in Borve has changed to the 1st of October.
