Beach clean project studies 50 years of litter

Close to 14,000 pieces of litter have been collected on Skye during a pioneering research project carried out on the island.

From the 23rd July through to 3rd of August, the Skye Beach Clean group alongside researchers from Loughborough University conducted a series of beach cleans from Neist Point to Knock Bay looking at 50 years of litter.

The results will be compared with a study carried out more than 50 years ago on beaches in the Elgol area of Skye.

Equipment fundraising success for Portree Nursery

Portree Nursery has raised £700 towards new play equipment through a stall at the Skye Agricultural Show on Saturday.

The team at the Skye capital childcare service thanked everyone for their generosity, which will go towards benefitting local children.

Scottish Crofting Federation appoint new chief executive

Donna Smith has today been announced as the new chief executive of the Scottish Crofting Federation.

Ms Smith will succeed current CEO Patrick Kruse who is set to step down in October.

Jonathan Hedges, chair of the SCF said that there was plenty interest in the post from highly competent candidates but said that the federation’s board was unanimous in our decision to offer the post to Donna Smith.

Donna Smith joins the Scottish Crofting Federation from a background in crofting policy and having run her own business consultancy.

Commenting on her appointment, she said was delighted to take up the new role but stress that that a strong collective voice was needed to speak on behalf of crofters amid many challenges in rural policy formation.

She said her priority will be to grow the SCF membership and ensure that the voice of crofters is heard loud and clear in policy circles.
