Bank of Scotland: Kyle and Mallaig branches to close
The Kyle and Mallaig branches of the Bank of Scotland are to shut as part of a raft of closures by the Lloyds Banking Group.
On Thursday, the Lloyds Group, which owns the Bank of Scotland, Lloyds bank, and the Halifax building society, revealed that it will close a further 15 branches across 2024/25, taking the total number of closures to 41 branches.
The Kyle of Lochalsh branch situated on Main Street will close on 27th January 2025, while the Mallaig branch is also set to shut permanently on 16th October this year.
The Bank of Scotland stated that between February 2019 and February 2024, within the Kyle branch, there has been a 52 per cent decrease in personal customers and a 48 per cent decline in business customers across the same period.
The Bank of Scotland added that when it came to cash machine transactions there has been a 27 per cent drop in use by personal customers between February 2019 and February 2024, and a 36 per cent decrease in business customers use across the same period.
The bank has stated that there are a total of 158 customers who use the branch regularly each month.
The next nearest Bank of Scotland branch for customers at Kyle is located in Portree.

Council outline £60 million road investment plan

The Highland Council has announced £60 million plus of investment on roads and infrastructure over the next three years.

During a meeting of the full council of Thursday, the local authority announced that increases in capital through the Highland Investment Plan should see a further £287m investment to sustain roads and transport infrastructure over 20 years. This is pending agreement by the council as part of budget setting from 2027 onwards.

There will also be additional funding to strengthen existing capital commitments to a range of on-going infrastructure needs over the next twenty years, including roads, bridges, street lighting, fleet, plant, equipment, and other infrastructure including flood prevention, piers, and harbours.

The leader of the Highland Council Raymond Bremner said: “The planned investment will help to address the on-going challenges we face in maintaining more than 4,000 miles of Highland roads and sustaining rural communities.

A total of £63.4m will be spent on roads and infrastructure improvements over the next three years.

Sleat aim to keep West Highland flag flying

In sport, Sleat and Strath face Tomatin United as they look to continue to fly the flag for the West Highland league in the Highland Amateur Cup this weekend.

The Skye side take on Tomatin in Culloden at 2pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile in shinty, Skye ladies will take on reigning WCA National Division champions Badenoch in a 12pm throw in Portree on Saturday
