Drivers face a 40 mile diversion after a landslip blocked the Idrigill road.

Mud, turf and rock fell away from the side of the main A855 road on Friday afternoon, on the approach to the hairpin bend above Uig.

It’s not clear when the road will reopen.

In an update over the weekend, Highland Council said the roads department carried out an inspection on Saturday morning and that work was underway to “remove the slipped material while an assessment of repairs required takes place”.

Diversion

Residents north of the road closure are having to take the long way round.

Planned work on the Quirraing road connecting Uig and Staffin has been postponed. Though Highland Council is urging people to use the north end loop instead because of the condition of the bealach road.

CCTV

Jon Preedy lives next to the road. He caught the incident on CCTV.

Community spirit

Kilmuir residents Anne Martin and John White came to the rescue of a group of children taking part in a theatre workshop at Kilmuir Hall on Saturday. The pair cycled down the closed road to get some much needed supplies for the youngsters from local shop, Rankins.

In an update on Facebook, the Kilmuir Community Hall page said: “Always so grateful to have fantastic local businesses close by and folk willing to, quite literally, go the extra mile for the Hall!”
