The site of the old Broadford Hospital could be used to build homes for health and social care workers
Demolition of the former Dr. MacKinnon Memorial Hospital is scheduled to begin before the end of March, following the handover of the land from NHS Highland. The building has been empty since the opening of the new Broadford Hospital in 2022.
Highland Council officials say early discussions about the future of the cleared site have focused on providing accommodation for staff working in health and social care, an issue that has long affected recruitment and retention in rural areas such as Skye.
While plans are still at an early stage, the local authority said any proposals would go through community consultation as part of the formal planning process.
Richard MacDonald, NHS Highland’s Director of Estates, Facilities and Capital Planning, said:
“We’re delighted to be working with the Mackinnon Memorial Hospital Working Group looking at the provision of healthcare accommodation as part of the development, and exploring other opportunities that can arise as part of the project going forward.”
