A group of climbers is looking for a new site to put a climbing wall on the island.
The wall is currently in storage after the facility at Third Ridge in Portree closed.
A committee has been set up to explore ideas. One solution could see the wall split across more than one venue. The group is also looking at raising money for a purpose built facility.
“We got together at short notice to make sure the wall wasn’t lost, and now we’re working out what happens next,” said a spokesperson for the group.
More than 200 people have responded to a survey asking what they would want from any future set up.
“We’re genuinely open about what that looks like. We hope that the future wall, in whatever form it takes, reflects what the island actually needs, and the survey is how we find that out,” said the spokesperson.
“From October onwards there just isn’t a lot to do indoors here, particularly for families and young people,” the spokesperson added. “Skye already has a lot of outdoor climbers, and a wall gives people somewhere to train for that as well as somewhere to be indoors. We’d love to have something in place for this winter and we’re working towards it, having already viewed a few venues. But there’s a lot to line up, so we can’t make any promises yet.”
The online survey is still open for contributions.
People with ideas of where the wall can go are being urged to contact the committee via fourthridgeskye@gmail.com
